Industrial windows are often found in old factory buildings and were an alternative to the widely used single-glazed windows with wooden frames. The weight usually rested on a solid steel frame into which individual window panes were inserted. This was inspired by the leaded glass windows used in churches, where window panes also rested in a frame.
As technology progressed, windows were replaced by high-quality alternatives. These modern windows could be manufactured more quickly, were more translucent and usually also offered good thermal insulation due to multiple glazing and heat-insulating glass .
The glass itself has also been modified over time. The simple flat glass panes have been replaced by single-pane safety glass panes , which are significantly more stable.
After many old factory buildings were converted into residential buildings (New York and London began doing this in the 1970s), the old windows also found a new purpose. The panes were replaced and adapted to modern conditions.
A real trend has emerged, so many companies have taken up this trend and are producing partition walls with an industrial look . Laminated safety glass (VSG) is used, while the frames are made of corrosion-resistant steel, true to the original.
The industrial look is enjoying a renaissance and the partition walls are actually a good option when a modern look would not fit into the overall visual image. In contrast to the past, as already mentioned, laminated safety glass is used. This consists of several individual layers of flat glass, each of which is held together by a strong adhesive film.
This results in the following advantages:
The frame is also solid and can be installed quickly and easily. These partition walls often remain in the building for a lifetime and lighten the atmosphere with their rustic charm.
The individual panes are always made of laminated safety glass (VSG), which also has heat-insulating properties due to its thickness. VSG glass is used because single-pane safety glass (ESG) would be too expensive to produce.
This is because the tempered glass cannot be cut afterwards . If you tried to do so, it would break into several individual pieces due to the pre-stressing.
The frame, on the other hand, is made of steel, which can be either galvanized or rusted. While in the first case painting is also necessary to create an industrial look , the second variant is completely different.
A scale layer is an oxide layer that is created during the production process at high temperatures. This means that the pure steel is better protected and slightly uneven. This layer is often powder-coated so that the rustic look lasts for a long time.
A glass door with an industrial look can be quickly and easily implemented in a wall opening, like a niche shower . To do this, the frame is inserted in a level position and then the door is inserted. It becomes more complex if individual dividing elements are added.
In these cases, the floor is first cleared of all unevenness and then another helper holds the first partition wall in position. The element is aligned using a spirit level and screwed to the wall.
These steps are repeated until the entire partition wall has been installed. In between there may also be a partition wall with a frame , which is installed in the same way as the other walls.
Finally, the door is hung and the lock is screwed on. In contrast to before, the glass panes are in clamping profiles and thus ensure long-lasting protection.
